Chapter 14

The next few hours, perhaps days, were a blur.

The logging truck driver must have called 911. Kai vaguely remembered an ambulance and concerned paramedics asking questions he didn't have answers for.

They were convinced he'd been in an accident, and kept asking where his car was. Even dazed, the world going dark at the edges, Kai knew better than to tell them about dragons.... and the massacre probably happening at Esther's house at this very moment.

He was taken to the local Mark Twain hospital, then flown by helicopter to a larger, specialty hospital in the San Joaquin Valley.

It turned out, not only were Kai's ribs cracked, but his spleen and liver were lacerated by the crushing damage. Bruce weighed a hell of a lot.

He awoke an indefinite time later with his foster sister, Linda, sitting by his bedside side. Linda's normally neat ponytail had wisps escaping here and there, and her carefully applied makeup was smudged. She made an aborted move as if to hug him, but all the IVs and wires got in the way.

"I got your postcard," was the first thing she said, wiping at her mascara under her eye with the side of her thumb. "Who even sends those, nowadays? You asshole."

"Sorry," he replied faintly. But that was his sister all over: Rough on the outside, with a gooey caramel center.

She sniffled. "I had to turn it into the police so they could look for clues." The way she spoke the last word made her opinion on that possibility loud and clear.

Kai swallowed through a dry throat, glanced at the IV which held pain meds, and resisted the urge to toggle the button for the good stuff. It wasn't like he didn't need it, but his mother had gone down that road after a back surgery and never come back. Kai had been careful of painkillers to the point of paranoia ever since.

"How long?" he rasped.

"You've been in the hospital three days, honey. The nurse will probably be making her rounds, soon. And..." She squeezed Kai's hand carefully, wary of the wires. "You've been gone just over a year."

The year didn't matter. Three days. Three hours would give Catherine enough time to... to take over Esther's house.

Three days...

He pushed away that thought forcefully. No, he wouldn't imagine it. Wouldn't allow himself to wonder if Winnie, Stan and the rest of their family were alive or dead.

"Did you get the money?" he rasped, desperate to focus on something else.

Linda looked blank.

"For your class? I hid it under the kiosk at the bank—"

"Oh, yes. Of course." She looked horrified. "Is that why they took you? Kai—"

"No. I..." He stopped. Telling her there were dragons who lived in a parallel universe version of Yosemite might not go over well. Like, at all.

For a moment, he entertained the dizzy thought that it had all been a dream, but... No. What had happened to him was insane, unbelievable, but real. Sebastian was real. He was back in their tiny one room cabin. Alone.
